Water quality is one of the critical global issues of concern. Ensuring access to clean drinking water can reduce various diseases caused by waterborne pathogens. These diseases place a particularly severe burden on people in developing countries, especially impoverished and rural populations. Providing clean drinking water supplies and sound water, sanitation, and hygiene management not only improves quality of life and alleviates the financial burden of purchasing drinking water, but also prevents health risks and reduces plastic bottle usage.
To align with the World Health Organisation’s specific target of “safely managed drinking water services” and the United Nations’ “2030 Sustainable Development Goals”, GX launched the “Direct Potable Water Project” in Timor-Leste for the first time in 2024. In collaboration with local community health centres and churches, GX is planning preventive measures to protect public health and will use the outcomes and experience gained locally to extend the project to more countries.
Direct Potable Water Project
Contaminated water remains a silent crisis, with 2 billion people globally lacking access to safe drinking water – a leading cause of child mortality and preventable diseases like cholera. In Timor-Leste, where 70% of surface water is polluted, GX’s “Direct Potable Water Project” has installed 100 nanotechnology-based water purification machines to transform unsafe water into clean, drinkable resources. Installed in hospitals, churches, and community hubs, these machines provide:
- 400,000 gallons of free potable water annually
- USD 800,000 in annual savings for communities
- A 3 million bottle reduction in plastic waste each year
By merging innovation with local partnerships, we’re turning a basic human need into a catalyst for long-term health and environmental progress.
