Mr. LEUNG Chun-ying, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of GX Foundation, led a delegation to Rwanda from 13 to 15 January 2026. Marking the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Rwanda, the visit aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in public health and medical assistance.

Meeting with the Rwandan Prime Minister to Reinforce Bilateral Ties
During the visit, Chairman LEUNG and Prof. CHAN Ying-yang, Emily, CEO of GX Foundation, held meetings with Rwandan Prime Minister Justin NSENGIYUMVA and Minister of Health Sabin NSANZIMANA. Both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on bilateral cooperation and health development strategies and exchanged views on the current state of Rwanda’s public health and medical services.

Community Engagement and Visit to Chinese Medical Team in Rwanda
To gain a more comprehensive understanding of Rwanda’s history and China’s assistance efforts in the country, the delegation visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, met with Dr Brian CHIROMBO, WHO Representative in Rwanda, and conducted on-site inspections of the China-assisted Masaka Hospital and New Masaka Hospital to learn more about local medical services. The delegation also visited members of the Chinese medical team in Rwanda. In addition, the delegation toured mountain villages supported by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, distributed sticky fly traps at local markets, and held discussions with Chinese enterprises and community leaders in Rwanda to better understand the local political and economic situation.

In September 2024, during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation, Chinese President XI Jinping and Rwandan President Paul KAGAME jointly announced the elevation of China–Rwanda relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, charting the course for future cooperation between the two countries.
