Senegal hosts closing ceremony for first project phase; project site relocated to Ndioum
On May 5th, GX held a ceremony in the capital, Dakar, for the closing of the cataract project in Fatick and the signing of the new project in Ndioum. In the presence of Chairman LEUNG Chun-ying and the Chargé d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Senegal, Li Yan, CEO Prof. CHAN Ying-yang, Emily and Senegal's Minister of Health and Social Action, Ibrahima SY, signed a new MOU, moving the "Cataract Blindness Elimination Programme" to Ndioum. This marks GX as the first Chinese charity organization to establish a long-term presence in the region.
Since October 2023, the Fujian Provincial Health Commission has dispatched 7 medical teams to Fatick to provide free cataract surgeries for the locals. By the end of April this year, over 6,000 patients had undergone eye screenings, with more than 3,600 cataract surgeries completed, achieving a 100% success rate and receiving high praise from the local community.
During the ceremony, Chairman LEUNG remarked, "Over the past year, GX has shared China's medical technology with the people of Senegal. The inspiring stories of patients who have regained their sight after 30 years of blindness, as well as the experiences of the elderly over a hundred years old, vividly reflect the friendship between China and Senegal."
The following day, Chairman LEUNG led a delegation to Ndioum, about a 9-hour drive from the capital, to meet and exchange ideas with local officials and the Director of Ndioum Regional Hospital. An inspection was conducted of the local environment and hospital conditions to prepare for the new project implementation.
