GX today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Faculty of Medicine, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, and The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at GX's global headquarters. GX will partner with the three aforementioned top-tier universities in Hong Kong that offer medical education to foster and develop future generations of international humanitarian talents.
Witnessed by Mr. LEUNG Chun-ying, Chairman of GX; Prof. Isabella POON, Acting Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Prof. TENG Jin-guang, President of PolyU; and Prof. ZHANG Xiang, President of HKU, the Memoranda were signed by Prof. CHAN Ying-yang, Emily, Chief Executive Officer of GX; Prof. Philip CHIU, Dean of Medicine at the CUHK Faculty of Medicine; Prof. David SHUM, Dean of Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at PolyU; and Prof. LAU Chak-sing, Dean of Medicine at the HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.
Chairman LEUNG stated, “Under the ‘one country, two systems’ framework, Hong Kong possesses unique advantages that can assist the nation in establishing a discourse on international humanitarian assistance, thus playing a crucial role in effectively supporting our participation in global governance and international development cooperation. This aligns with the national 15th Five-Year Plan, which aims to ‘build a community with a shared future for humanity’, deepen solidarity and cooperation with developing countries, implement global governance initiatives, support the self-strengthening of the Global South, increase foreign aid efforts, and provide more international public goods. To achieve this, Hong Kong needs to establish a talent pipeline through continuous training and supply of skilled professionals.”
He further stated, “By collaborating with multiple universities in Hong Kong, GX underscores its long-term commitment to developing humanitarian talent. GX will partner with these three local universities to provide systematic training for students from both Hong Kong and Belt and Road countries, conduct joint research on health issues in these regions, and strengthen knowledge transfer between academia and the humanitarian sector. The collaboration aims to combine resources to contribute more effectively to international medical humanitarian assistance, embodying the spirit of ‘sharing’ and ‘people-to-people connectivity’, in order to build a community with a shared future for humanity.”
Prof. Isabella Poon, Acting Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, noted that the collaboration aligns closely with the Faculty’s mission to combine academic excellence with social responsibility, stating that CU Medicine aims to work tightly with GX Foundation to cultivate future physicians with excellence, compassion and empathy through structured community engagement and humanitarian service.
Prof. TENG Jin-guang, President of PolyU, emphasised that this multi-party cooperation is not only a practice of social responsibility but also a testament of the University’s commitment to leveraging its academic advantages and contributing to society, the Nation and the world through innovations. He said: “Our strengths in health and medical disciplines together with our pioneering translational research that transforms scientific discovery into healthcare applications, provide a solid foundation for contributing to GX’s health projects. We look forward to joining forces with GX and fellow institutions to advance global health and humanitarian development, and create a lasting positive impact for communities in need.”
Prof. ZHANG Xiang, President of HKU, added that the collaboration would provide valuable opportunities for students and faculty to engage with real-world humanitarian challenges, remarking: “We appreciate GX's support, which enables our students to gain experiential learning by applying their techniques and scientific knowledge in challenging environments, fostering both technical skills and a compassionate heart. The HKUMed has been highly acclaimed for its work in public health, we are confident that the long-term collaboration between HKU and GX will bring about real impact to mankind.”.
The MOUs are established for an initial term of five years. With the aim to leverage GX’s extensive frontline experience in delivering medical and public health humanitarian aid across Belt and Road countries with the universities’ academic and clinical expertise to advance research, the collaboration is poised to create a powerful platform for enhancing professional exchange in global public health and humanitarian assistance thus nurturing professionals equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for international humanitarian work.
