Timor-Leste becomes GX Foundation’s 6th project country Medical aid fosters people-to-people and cultural exchange between two countries

China and Timor-Leste have established diplomatic relations for more than 20 years. President XI Jin-ping, and Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Mr. Kay Rala Xanana GUSMÃO announced on 23 September 2023 to elevate China and Timor-Leste ties to comprehensive strategic partnership and continue promoting “Belt and Road” cooperation.

Chairman of GX Foundation, Mr. LEUNG Chun-ying, travelled to Timor-Leste and checked on the running of the project from 21 January to 25 January. He visited multiple medical institutions and attended the opening ceremony on 23rd January. Other attendees of the ceremony include Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Mr. Kay Rala Xanana GUSMÃO; Chinese Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Ms. WANG Wenli; Vice Ministers of Health; CEO of GX Foundation, Professor Emily CHAN Ying-yang; representatives of WHO and Chinese-funded enterprises.

At the event, Chairman of GX Foundation, Mr. LEUNG Chun-ying expressed that being the first Hong Kong international non-governmental, not-for-profit charitable organization to launch medical assistance projects 4 months after the elevation of China and Timor-Leste ties to comprehensive strategic partnership fully demonstrates the work efficiency and flexibility of the Foundation. Mr. LEUNG added that Timor-Leste is GX Foundation’s inaugural country for the launch of a program targeting vector-borne diseases. During this trip, he once again visited the mountainous region of Maubisse, witnessing the Foundation's innovative and strong partnership with local churches and schools, as well as the fostering of “people-to-people" connectivity between the people of both nations.
