On 13th December 2022, GX signed an MOU with the Ministry of Health of Mauritania to formally launch the "GX Cataract Blindness Elimination Project” in Nouakchott. The Foundation will work with Heilongjiang Province of China to send expert medical teams, to provide free cataract surgeries to the elderly people of the region. In the first phase, 1 Mobile Eye Treatment Centre (METC) will be sent to Nouakchott to address backlog cases of cataract. On board the METC, a patient's vision can be restored in 20 minutes. The MOU was signed by Moktar Ould Dahi, Minister of Health of Mauritania, and Professor Chan Ying Yang Emily, CEO of GX Foundation. The ceremony was witnessed by Mr. Leung Chun-ying, Chairman of GX, and Chinese Embassy in Mauritania.
GX is excited to expand its work into West Africa, and to work with Mauritania to diminish the burden of reversible blindness in the country.
