GX Foundation completes 7300 cases of free cataract surgeries globally within 14 months

In celebration of its fifth anniversary, the cocktail reception of GX Foundation, a Hong Kong-based international humanitarian assistance organization, was held today (22 November) in Hong Kong. Mr. LEUNG Chun-ying, Chairman of GX Foundation; Mr. LEE Ka-chiu, Chief Executive of the HKSAR; Mr. ZHENG Yan-xiong, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Mr. LI Yong-sheng, Acting Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR and Prof. Emily CHAN Ying-yang, CEO of GX Foundation etc, delivered speeches in the event.

GX Foundation launched the “Cataract Blindness Elimination Program” nationwide in Laos in mid-September, followed by Prey Veng Province in Cambodia in December. In February 2023, the Program was launched nationwide across Djibouti in East Africa, and in early October 2023, the Program expanded to Mauritania nationwide and the Fatick region in Senegal in West Africa. As of 22 November 2023, GX Foundation has completed over 7,300 cases of free cataract surgeries across the 5 program countries.

Chairman of GX Foundation, Mr. LEUNG Chun-ying shared, “We have a patient who had been blinded for seven years, regained his sight after surgery. This old gentleman immediately rushed home to see his five-year-old grandson, whom he had hugged and kissed always, but had never seen. This is one of our 7,000 stories so far, and each one is a heart-warming story of ‘people-to-people connectivity’ and ‘sharing’ by the Chinese people with foreign people under the Belt and Road Initiative. These stories show how Chinese charity accompanies Chinese products, capital, and technology going out to other countries. In the next four years, there will be tens of thousands more of such stories.”
