Nicole Tung Wing Hei: My internship and volunteer involvement with GX highlighted the importance of “learning by doing” rather than purely learning from books.
Nicole Tung Wing Hei, a Year 3 medical student at The University of Hong Kong, is passionate about social services. She has participated in social services since a young age, taking part in volunteering activities with her local community centre, elderly home, and primary school. She was first connected to public health and humanitarian work and GX Foundation after taking part in a health project of ethnic minorities in 2018. Motivated to learn more about this discipline, she worked at the GX office as an intern in the summer of 2021 and returned to be a volunteer of Community Outreach Programme this year.
During her time at GX, she assisted in the planning of the inaugural Community Outreach Programme, with a particular focus on assessing the impact of COVID-19 on the overall wellbeing of the elderly population in Hong Kong, as well as their knowledge and attitudes towards disaster management.
