Nicky Chow Hau Yung: Health should be a universal right for everyone while a future healthcare provider should care for the well-being of all global citizens.
Nicky Chow Hau Yung, a Year 3 medical student of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and has planned to devote herself to the healthcare industry when she was young. She hopes to enable those people suffering from illness and diseases to have a chance to enjoy their life and experience the beauty of this world. Witnessing the overloaded healthcare system in Hong Kong, she wants to be one of the healthcare worker who safeguards the health of the public.
Nicky joined GX as an intern from July to August 2022 for a 6-week internship. During the internship, she helped organise and participate in the Hong Kong Community Outreach Programme. Nicky recognises that health should be a universal right for everyone while a future healthcare provider should care for the well-being of all global citizens. This internship at GX Foundation has provided her with a valuable experience to witness how a humanitarian project can be implemented. It has also enhanced her knowledge on the healthcare conditions in other countries such as Cambodia and Laos.
During the community visit, Nicky found that the elderly were very eager to share their stories and enjoyed talking with the volunteers, and hope more visits can be arranged during the pandemic. She realised that the elderly really need our care and knowledge, especially on evolving technologies such as using their smart phone.
Through participating in different social services, she not only has an opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, but she has also enhanced her communication skills and understandings towards society. More importantly, this can develop her sense of empathy which is conducive to her developing career. In the future, she will consider working in public health and humanitarian assistance field after having a fruitful and interesting experience in GX.
